There are a number of things that you could do when you are in the swimming pool. Some will burn more calories, some will burn less! So depending on what you do, and assuming you are of average weight (about 150 pounds) let us look at how many calories you would be burning!
Note: That if your weight is higher, you would be burning slightly more calories in the same activities. If your weight were lower, you would be burning slightly less calories!

As you can see from the above chart, swimming does burn a whole lot of calories! The fact is, in swimming, you are working against the resistance of the water all around you whatever action you are doing! So its kind of like weight training or resistance training.....but on every part of your body all at once. So, you will end up getting your muscles toned and burning calories at the same time.
But the best thing about swimming has to be the fact that, its enjoyable. There are many work-outs that you can take up that help you get in shape. But, most people don't succeed because, to succeed you have to stick to the work-out plan for a very long time. Swimming, is actually kinda fun. And at the end of it you don't feel sweaty and dirty, you feel fresh! So, it is a workout that you can actually stick to and get your weight loss results!
